Socratic Seminar Reflection- 1984 book3

The Socratic seminar influenced my thinking on the topic by improving my intellectual way of thinking as the students connect evidence from the book 1984 book 3 and from other documents..One thing that had made me think was how the students started the conversation with level 3 to "break the ice". I was impressed that you separated the group by the gender, It really worked out since everybody was able to express how they felt towards everybody answer and question. I love how the female group was respectful to everybody and didn't over talk over anybody, I just think the male group just needs to work on how no to over talk somebody when they're talking. With us separated everybody was comfortable with one another.

One thing that surprise me was when I asked " If one word has many meaning, does that make language richer or poorer?", I felt that all the female in the group was able to talk about this for 2 minutes and was dragging in other female to join in, expressing their opinion.

Everybody in the group was prepared to answer question and had their quotes ready to use. I think we just need to speak louder and was kinda hard for me to hear even though we are lest then 1-4 feet away from each other.
Watching the male group was pretty fun, since they got so intense in the question and response. This worked out better then I expected.

Things that needs to be improved is before class starts do a ice breaker since every time we do a seminar everybody feel so awkward towards each other.  So far a good Socratic seminar.

Socratic Seminar Reflection

The Socratic seminar influenced my thinking on the topic by improving my intellectual way of thinking as a reader and connecting ideas back from text to text. One thing that had made me think was how a student stated evidence from the book and had very good develop level 3 question.. I was impressed that people who doesn't talk actually talked during this group discussion.

One thing that made me thing was when a student asked the group: "What is love?". This was actually a good questions some students couldn't really explain what it mean, since live have a deeper meaning to explain with just words.

The less dominant group worked out okay. Everybody was sorta prepared to answer question. I say this because since we read the book together in class and clarified each meaning of lines in the book we were able to justify our intellectual meaning of  the book; by doing so we were ready fro the Socratic seminar.

Two thing that need improvement is picking a stronger group leader, one that would pick a student on the spot and give strong level 3 and 2 question. Another is putting at least 2-3 dominant people in the less dominant group, to make the group flow by faster. I say thing because if you do so, when a student asks a question to another maybe a dominant student can clarify for the whole group and it would make everything much easier/

Other Wes Moore #2

The theme of chapter 2 of which I've chosen Poverty and Mentoring.

I've chosen Poverty as the theme because Wes is living in a bad condition apartment, and doesn't really like the place. The living condition is horrible but some of the people are used to it living in the projects. This type of living is horrible, living inside this area would get you discriminate as a place that do drugs and is a local gang hang out. I wouldn't live in these type of area, but poverty had led them into it.
"The Uplands became home to a thriving middle class, while over 1,700 units in Cherry Hill became a breeding ground for poverty, drugs, and despair"

"The walls and floors were covered in filth and graffiti"D

This quote reveals that society is messed and cruel, one group of people have suffer while the other group strive. This shows the economic wealth in Wes family and shows their class ranking.

"The extreme heat in my poorly ventilated room woke me in the middle of the night. I was dying of thirs
This quote shows that with poverty it can worsen a person living condition and can cause some type of harm to a person physical body. These type of conditon can kill somebody, with the high level of heat Wes could of died from dehydration or had a heat stroke. They don't have enough money to buy a cheap fan to cool down the window, so they'll have to put up with it.

I've chosen Mentoring because his brother has been looking after him and giving him tips. His brother is basically like his right hand, he teaches him how to defend himself. Wes follows his mentor into the life on crime and no chance of going back.

"'Rule number one: If someone disrespects you, you send a message so fierce that they won't have the chance to do it again"  (^ this goes for above)

"His grip on the knife handle tightened...Send a message"

Wes disregarded everything that was happening around him, even with the police infront of him. He was ready to kill or seriously injure somebody. When Wes was little anytime things were bad he would jump right in it/

The Other Wes Moor blog post #1

The theme of chapter 1 is based on 2 theme topic which is Poverty and Life choices. I've chosen these 2 themes because the protagonist of the story, Westley, he kinda of doesn't know from his right or wrong of hitting his friend Nikki. When his mother finds him hitting Nikki he immediately runs to his room and hide. He doesn't have enough room to hide since his room is so small. Also the the states that he love near the Maryland and Washington D.C. border line near tenement.  In the story it's states, "Those hands were now reaching for me… still unsure about what I'd done so terribly wrong". He notice the actions that were going to be thrown in him, Another example the text states, "And still trying to comprehend why I was in so much trouble... I sat in the middle of the room, next to my sisters empty crib, awaiting my fate". He didn't know by hitting Nikki he would have a punishment from him mom, just waiting for the moment to come. Another example from the test, "I shared with my baby sister Shani. Our room wasting, barely enough for my small bed and her crib". This show that Westley family probably live in a low income house were there is really no much of space in ones room. The test also states, "I wanted to tap on the window to say hello as she walked past our house to the tenement building next door". This shows that Westley's family lives in a low income house and probably in a tenement ( A room or a set of rooms forming a separate residence within a house or block of apartments that are owned by the poor) building, located in a poor neighborhood. Finally the text states, " Years would pass before I understood how the blow connections to my mom's past". This show that Westley has yet to find how everything he's experienced or done is connected to his mom and her appearance towards him. He hope not to upset his mom in the future by knowing from his right and wrong. As you can see the them of chapter in is based on 2 theme topics of Poverty and Life Choices.

Socratic Seminar

The Socratic seminar influenced my thinking on the topic by improving my intellectual way of thinking as a reader and connecting ideas back from text to text. One thing that had made me think was how a student stated examples from 4 different articles and connected back to each other. The teacher had some very good level 2 questions. I was impressed that people who doesn't talk actually talked during this group discussion.

One thing that mad me think was when Adriana asked "How would connected poverty to grapes of wrath". This was actually a question everybody in the group had to think about. Another one was "What is your feeling towards poverty?" I felt that everybody in the group expressed and shared their thoughts on it.

The group leader was phenomenal. Her level 2 and 3 question was very good. Her way of speaking changed everybody aspects on the book and the different articles. Her speaking on the topics was clear.

One thing that needs to be worked on is more than one person talking for whole group.

Socratic Seminar

To be honest the seminar didn't improve my intellectual way of thinking because I felt as if the my group wasn't prepared to talk ad discuss on the topic. I can say that he other group was good because they were on topic the whole time, they had strong level 2 and 3 questions.  I guess both group can learn from each others mistakes. Nothing really made me think on something that was so in depth.

The  statement I agree with the most is that " Money Can't Buy You Happiness". There was nothing that was said in the group that I disagreed with. I felt as  if most of the people in he group shared their thoughts, I agreed with them I felt as if they were right. Things that need to be said in the group is more level 2 and 3 questions. I would like some people to speak in the group instead of staying quite as a mouse. I want them to speak up in the group.

I think the group leader worked really good because she was able to state level 2 questions and grab others in the group attention on the topic. She also had very strong level 2 and 3 questions. She was able to give a clear statement on the topic.

I think there need to be more people to speak and ask questions, also the coaching need more work on.
